From Dedication to Designation
In 1976, as the nation approached America’s Bicentennial, rapid development threatened historic structures across Pinellas County. Through a partnership between the Pinellas County Historical Commission and the Junior League of Clearwater, the House of Seven Gables and the Plant–Sumner House were saved and relocated to Heritage Village, forming the foundation of what would become the county’s premier open-air history museum.
Now, after five decades at Heritage Village, these two buildings meet the criteria for local historic landmark designation—an acknowledgment that affirms their historical and cultural significance, strengthens eligibility for preservation funding, and reflects a high standard of professional stewardship. Recognition by the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners further underscores their importance as integral components of the county’s heritage.
The commemorative event will take place at the House of Seven Gables, located at Heritage Village, 11909 125th Street, Largo, Florida. Community members, partners, and preservation advocates are invited to attend and celebrate this important moment in Pinellas County history.
This milestone honors not only the past, but the ongoing commitment to preserving the places that shape our shared story.
